2008 BMW M6 at Lang Racing Development

The naturally aspirated BMW V10 engine is a rare breed in the current world filled with turbo charged four, six, and, eight cylinder engines. This 5.0-liter S85 powerplant represents the pinnacle of BMW’s naturally aspirated engine development, producing an impressive 500 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The symphony of ten cylinders screaming to its 8,250 RPM redline creates an emotional connection that modern turbocharged engines simply cannot replicate.

This BMW engine platform is already a few generations back and approaching 20 years old, but some are embracing this classic BMW design and breathing new life into an aging car. The E63/E64 generation M6 was produced from 2005 to 2010, representing BMW’s grand touring vision at its finest. Despite its age, the M6’s aggressive styling, featuring its distinctive power dome hood and muscular proportions, remains timelessly elegant and continues to turn heads on the road today.

One of Lang Racing Development’s clients recently acquired a 2008 BMW M6 and decided to give it the love and attention it needed to open a new chapter in its life. Like many high-performance vehicles of this era, the M6 requires meticulous care and proactive maintenance to ensure reliable performance. The V10 engine, while legendary for its sound and power delivery, is known for specific maintenance requirements that, when addressed properly, can provide years of exhilarating driving experience.

BMW M6 service work

Our team replaced the rod bearings, the fuel injectors, the spark plugs, and the ignition coils. We also installed a new coil over suspension, replaced worn bushings, and did an alignment. The rod bearing replacement is particularly crucial on these engines, as it prevents catastrophic engine failure – a common issue when this maintenance is neglected.

The rod bearings we selected for this BMW S85 engine is our own custom ACL combination pack we sell direct here on our website:

This custom top/bottom ACL rod bearing combination provides just enough extra clearance that we believe the rod bearings need.

The fuel injectors installed were factory genuine BMW fuel injectors along with factory ignition coils. Although there are a variety of aftermarket ignition coils available, we selected the factory ones due to their better sustain performance over time.

The fuel injectors and ignition components ensured optimal combustion and power delivery, while the suspension upgrades transformed the car’s handling characteristics, bringing it closer to modern performance standards.

This preventative maintenance and new suspension upgrade marks the beginning of a new life for this classic BMW V10 M6. The transformation goes beyond mere mechanical restoration; it’s about preserving automotive heritage while enhancing the driving experience. With proper care and thoughtful modifications, these vehicles can provide performance that rivals many modern sports cars, all while maintaining the character and soul that made them special in the first place.
