Retrofitting a classic Porsche with modern air conditioning is a priority for those who use their car year-round. The original system is heavy, inefficient, and often leaves drivers sweating. Classic Retrofit’s electric A/C kit changes that equation, offering lightweight, efficient cooling with minimal impact on performance. For this 1989 Porsche 964, we installed their electric air-conditioning system and high-output alternator. The project demanded careful fabrication, wiring, and tuning, but the result was reliable, efficient cooling that complements the car’s engineering rather than compromising it.

Why Electric A/C?

The Classic Retrofit system eliminates the factory belt-driven compressor in favor of a compact electric unit powered by an upgraded alternator. For a performance-oriented street car, the advantages are clear:

The Kit

Classic Retrofit’s kit is designed for 964/993 models and includes an electric compressor, two condensers, fans, brackets, wiring harnesses, ECU, evaporator core, and hardware. This system is designed to use factory vents and HVAC controls while adding modern control logic, but Classic Retrofit also provides similar kits designed for older 911 G-bodies without factory AC.

The electric compressor places heavy demands on the charging system (especially at idle with headlights, fans, and the blower all running), so upgrading the electrical capacity is absolutely essential for hot climates like Southern California. We went with Classic Retrofit’s 175-amp alternator, which is lighter than the stock part and houses a more reliable and modern voltage regulator.

Installation

We removed the stock compressor, condenser, and refrigerant lines completely, then addressed parts placement. The compressor was mounted just outside the spare tire well, which required some drilling for the bracket hardware and cable routing. Instead of splitting condensers across both sides of the car, we stacked both on one side to keep the A/C and oil-cooling systems independent and unmolested. This did sacrifice some cooling efficiency, but made for a simpler, cleaner installation. The provided brackets held the condensers securely, while fabricated ducting with foam seals ensured airflow through the cores even at low speeds. The wheel liner was then trimmed and reshaped to accept the new assembly.

To install the evaporator, the factory airbox had to be removed, which on this car meant dropping the fuel tank for access. We took this opportunity to replace the blower motors and airbox seals as well as to test every flapper servo for functionality, since any leakage inside the airbox would significantly reduce performance. The kit’s replacement evaporator and temperature sensor fit with some minor trimming, and the whole assembly went back into place.

The refrigerant system was straightforward, using cut-to-length tubing and chafing guards routed along factory lines, with charge and evacuation ports accessible once the wheel liner was removed. The system was then vacuum-tested, pressure-tested, and charged with R-134a using the shop’s AC servicing equipment.

Wiring was more involved. The compressor has a parasitic draw when not running, so we installed a heavy-duty contact relay to isolate it. We were also able to provide a clean and unobtrusive presentation by wiring the compressor control box into the stock climate control panel, and the condenser fan power circuit directly into the factory fuse box. Installing the high-output alternator required rerouting and upgrading the main power and ground cables in the engine bay and ensuring the battery charging cable was up to spec.

Tuning was as critical as the actual installation. The system ships with conservative settings designed around the stock alternator, which limit compressor speed and current draw. With the higher-capacity alternator, these limits can be raised for better performance. Ramp rates, voltage and amperage limits, and compressor speed settings were all adjusted so the system wouldn’t undergo current spikes.

Results

The tuned system delivered vent temperatures lower than stock and held them steady in traffic and at highway speed. With the dual condensers stacked and ducted properly, oil cooling remained uncompromised, and with no belt-driven compressor, there is no penalty to throttle response.

Classic Retrofit’s electric A/C system transforms the driving experience of an air-cooled 911, bringing modern comfort without sacrificing performance or originality. While installation requires patience and attention to detail, the results are worth it: efficient cooling, reduced engine load, and a seamless integration into Porsche’s design.
